    It seems I erred in blaming this on the Tolkien Estate. According to Douglas Anderson's essay in "Meditations on Middle-Earth", the licensing of movie tie-ins is controlled by a different business entity. See excerpt posted at http://greenbooks.theonering.net/tributes/files/anderson_med.html
