While I slept like the proverbial log early Sunday morning, this happened a few buildings away.
The local fishwrapper reports no major injuries at the scene, but also points out that it's the second major apartment fire in the last few weeks.
This fellow, however, seems unfazed by all the excitement:

A consultation with a couple of bird books suggests that the tall fellow is a sandhill crane. According to National Geographic's Complete Birds of North America, they make "deep, far-carrying, rolled or rattled honking cries, k'worrh, grrowh or grrah-uu, and ah grruu."
Perhaps this explains the weird sounds emanating from the swamp lately. I'd much rather it was loudmouthed cranes than Lovecraftian horrors.
