Say it ain't so
A poster on the LibRef-L listserv mentions that Kirkus Reviews has begun offering "commissioned reviews" for $350. The information is attributed to trade publication Publisher's Lunch, to which I don't have access. Anyone out there know more?

But even if is so, as long as libraries (or other book selectors/buyers) are aware that the Kirkus is offering "commissioned reviews" for a fee, they can factor that in when deciding how much emphasis to place on that review, can't they?
I know next-to-nothing about the publishing industry -- but are there "reviewers" that specialise in providing similar "commissioned" reviews to publishers? How are reviewers typically compensated?

All I get is a free copy of the book--and a line on my resume.

Hey, what about that feeling of pride/accomplishment upon seeing your review in print?

Yeah, it's a bit of an ego-stroke too.
