Someone built a new hotel – a nice hotel. It has a main phone number that was terribly easily confused with another number – the number of someone who didn't like being the wrong number.
She talked to the hotel manager. She begged them to change their number. She tried to be nice.
And then she started taking reservations. She took room reservations, meeting reservations, catering reservations, and wedding reception reservations. She was very good at taking reservations. She would even helpfully suggest additional services such as chauffeurs, flowers and such, not to mention offer complimentary champagne breakfasts for important guests.
And why not? It wasn't her hotel. She was just someone the hotel thought didn’t matter.
Actually, that particular hotel only lasted a year or so in business. Someone else bought them out. They brought with them their own phone numbers.

I once got a "leftover" number that previously belonged to the vice principal of a nearby middle school, a Mr Larry Wilkerson. Despite the temptation, I could never quite bring myself to take advantage of the concerned parents that kept calling.
My current number seems to have belonged to a fax machine in a previous lifetime. S and I have spent the last year hanging up on fax machines at all hours of the day and night (ala Seinfeld), but now that we've finally got our own fax hooked up, we never get any of those calls anymore. Dammit.

I once had a telephone number which had belonged to a psychologist's office. People used to call me up and tell me their problems....
